Under Oregon's Measure 109, adults over the age of 21 may now access legal, psychedelic services in the state of Oregon. While this is a radical shift forward that voters supported, the movement for liberated consciousness is being hijacked with a hysterical conservative backlash. The process of finding safe, supportive spaces can be confusing, expensive and challenging. As a former wild child who explored psychedelics extensively in my youth, and rediscovered the power of microdosing as an adult in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic (when I was blessed to have access to citizen scientists), I believe people have a fundamental human right to explore and care for their own consciousness, whether for mental health, spiritual purposes, or recreation.
As a Unitarian Minister and practicing pagan, I approach psychedelics from a spiritual perspective. Under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993, all Americans theoretically have the religious freedom to use entheogenic substances as part of a sacramental practice of sincere religious belief. In addition, Oregon has precedent with the Smith case of 1990, involving the Native American Church, as well as the Church of the Holy Light of the Queen, an ayahuasca church in Ashland. While I have a spiritual practice, it is solely my own approach. Because of my deep commitment to freedom, autonomy, and choice, I do not push this perspective on anyone.
I simply listen to adults in the same way that I have for years with children - openly, with love.
As an academic and researcher, I offer preparation & integration with the structure of science behind me. Folks that prefer a secular, science-only approach can also find support in the research I cite, so people can make informed decisions about the options, risks, and benefits. I often utilize my Rogerian training in crisis intervention, which emphasizes "unconditional positive regard". This basically means I am not here to judge, but merely to ask, reflect, and support.
You may find your own freedom in the forest. I did.
